My
name is Melissa McCrory.
I am a mom
of four sons. I have been making
dolls for more than 30 years. I
teach porcelain doll making in my
studio. I have no art training at
all. I discovered my gift for
sculpting in a high school art
semester. I taught myself how to
sew sculpt and researched anything
involved with dolls or doll making.
My mother and I collect antique
dolls; we have around 400. I
discovered polymer clay about 15
years ago, but could not work with
it then because of arthritis in my
hands. Then, about five years ago, Sculpey came out with softer clay
and I discovered the "pasta machine"
- it was a God send. Now, I can
make all the babies I dreamed
about.
I still make porcelain
babies for the Home Shopping
Network, who I have been with off
and on for six years. I travel to
teach my craft for those who want to
learn. When I started, there were
no teachers and I know how
frustrating it can be when you want
to learn so bad.
Today, I have a
sculpting video out, which gives
step-by-step instructions on how to
make a one of a kind baby. I have
started to make some of my OOAK
creations into silicone babies.
This new process makes the babies
seem so real! |
